How Digital Matte painting
would make my overall composited scene look seamless reflecting realism to the
set?
With the
advancement of film technology, Matte paintings have gained popularities among
film, games and advertising industries. It has been performed in different ways
over time, As to categorize, Traditional form and Current Digital a form are
the means to perform where I will be emphasizing on digital aspects. The
technique covers art and live-action to create an illusion where the image
appears to be moving in a real-life environment. The main benefit of matte
painting is that this technique is Time & cost-saving resulting efficient
and convenient outcomes.
Watching
movie is fun and enjoyable but do we ever wonder how every scene that we see
are brought to be realistic and practical at the same time. To name some of the
all-time successful movies that are performed with a tremendous amount of matte
paintings are Mary Poppins, the Planet of the Apes, Dracula, King Kong, North
by the Northwest, The Birds etc. So, these movies have highly drawn my
attention, giving me enthusiasm and courage to explore and test more on current
subjects. I realized that the visual effects are also possible
without the complex and modern software usage. In the current meta of
digital world, Matte paintings are considered to be an emerging artform gaining
popularity among Film and TV industries. It is continuously growing every year
and has a significant impact on the overall look of the output scene.
From my previous academic journey, I had a general
idea about the makings of film and animated videos in order to show how they
are brought in life. Consequently, It fascinated me so much that led me to research
more and more about early filmmakers like George Melies, Norman Dawn, Oscar Gustave Rejlander.
This project is intended to provide an adequate experience to build fundamental
skill sets when it comes to digital compositing and matte painting. I take it
as a foundation to a future career as an animator and visual effects artist.
Here are some of my influencer
where I will be talking about their contribution to the field of matte painting
and composition.
1.George Melies:
From the mid to 19th century,
photographers were continuously experimenting with double exposure to produce a
full composite image. Melies basically painted the glass in black color as the
main background. this trick lets black matte to keep light from reaching the
main camera. As a result, the portion which is not exposed to light will appear
empty. George Melies, Oscar Gustave Rejlander (In 1857, they performed the
world first special effects images which were the combination of 32 negatives
into a single image known as montage combination print. he also published the
first motion picture comprise of special effects. some of his famous movies are
A trip to the moon, The house of the Devil, Rescue on the river, Cinderella,
Conjuring, etc.
2. Norman Dawn:
Dawn's to begin with film Missions
of California made broad utilization of the glass shot, in which certain things
are painted on a bit of glass and set in between the camera and the live
activity. Numerous of the buildings which First light was shooting were at
slightest mostly annihilated; by portray segments of roof or dividers, the
impression was made that the buildings were in truth, entire. The most contrast
between the glass shot and the matte shot is that with a glass shot, all
shooting is done with a single introduction of the film.
This led his work to appear low
cost and high quality, moreover, his shot created the mainstay in special
effects cinema throughout the century.
3. Andrew Kramer: I consider him as
the After Effects Guru because of his ability to express the working
methodologies on a respective software. As the host over 160
instructional videos and maker of title groupings for TV's Periphery and the
film Star Journey, Andrew has taken an interest in numerous shapes of
generation from visual impacts artist, to coordinating commercials and promos.
His site Video Co-pilot has been a massive dynamic constraint within the visual
impacts industry with his energetic preparing fashion and inventive plug-ins encouraging
artist around the globe.
Their contribution will always have a positive impact on my project. I will be
capturing random shots of Invercargill City using wide-angle camera lenses. As most
of the building in this city are small and boring in some ways. Thus, I will be
giving my best to make it look elegant and interesting. The footage that I will
be working on will be shot in the dusk where I can achieve both contrast and
illuminating look of a city. Having
a proper moving footage is a crucial part of my project as it carries all the
camera data information. On top this I will be editing and manipulating
images.
My matte painting process comprises
of following steps: Concept Development, Image Selection, Cutting and Compositing
at the end that includes lighting, grain/noise matching, camera tracking, colour
and lens correction.
To elaborate furthermore, “Concept Development”
refers to the advancement of overall cinematic look of Invercargill city street.
I considered this city reasonably small and less populated. Giving it a
different look can be interesting and fascination so I am going to different
props and lights that we see in street will be modified where I will be
replacing some of them from images downloaded from internet. I ought to be very
careful on selecting images, these images should be in raw file where I can get
most of the colour values, the camera angle should match the overall composition.
So as to sum up,
So as to sum up,
Concept: Under matte painting, there are
several principles which include green screening or chroma keying, digital
painting, colour grading, lighting etcetera. which I will be researching and
learning through the internet. This task will cover digital paintings of
sceneries and buildings and later composited together with moving cameras. I am
going to film this project during the dusk with hazy weather condition.
Planning: Analysing location and getting
permission from the respected department to shoot video either in private or public property around
Invercargill city. Besides, the good weather conditions of the city will
ease my effort as well, Arranging a camera and other equipment device where I will be asking Chris McDonald at SIT. Finally, Filming quality shots of a
background environment.
Wishful thinking: As a creative student, my future
goal is to include moving 3d objects into a scene and make it appear as a part
of the scene. I am very aware of the complexity and adequate knowledge it
requires. But First, I have to learn how to perform 3D animation which I hope
to gain On the successful completion of this study.
Software Use: My final output will be fully
composited under the mentioned software that is Nuke.
This project allows me to explore
the concept of matte painting and how it has evolved over time
Moreover, I will be able to learn
about handling software.
