New Zealand FILM COMMISSION funding

• Who is eligible to apply? 

NZ citizen, permanent resident or a business registered in NZ.  

Some grants are also offered to international film makers to film in NZ. 

 
• What costs can you get funding for? 
The NZFC provides funding to New Zealand filmmakers and businesses to assist in the production of both feature and short films. 
Types of funding include: 
-Development and Production funding 
-Talent Development Funding 
-Distribution Funding 
-International relations funding 
-& NZ Screen Production Grants 

 

 

 
• What costs cannot be supported? 

Using the funds on projects or just things that don’t directly apply to the creation of films (I presume it doesn't really say on applying for grants page) 

 
• What documentation is required? 

Varies according to the funding type, in general, one must have,  

-Vision (creative materials and statements from producer and director) 

-Audience engagement plan 

-Budget and timeline 

-Key personnel bios for key people. 

-Warranty of copyright, access, and clearances 

 
• How much can you apply for and how are decisions made? 

Monetary gain depends on which grant is being selected 

- Early development fund up $25,000 per applicant and up to $60,000 per project 

The New Zealand film commission is governed by an eight-member board appointed by the minister 

For Arts, Culture and Heritage 

 
• How often does the funder accept applications? 

- Some of the grants be all year rounders others have time limits some are limited some are less limited. 

 
• How far in advance of your proposed project would you need to apply? 

- No deadlines for project themselves but there are time limits on some of the grants. 

 
• Can you apply as an individual? 

I can’t find it saying an individual cannot apply to get a grantSo yes.

Rata Foundation funding

• Who is eligible to apply? 

Only non-profit organizations, including: 
-Incorporated societies, associations or organizations whose purpose is not to provide profits to members or shareholders. 
-entities registered under the Charities Act 2005 
-nonprofit educational institutes or churches 
-small unincorporated organizations that benefit a community, has been operating for 12+ months under a constitution, with bank accounts, statements, and 2 letters of support. 
-collaborative partnerships that support organizations 
-projects that benefit areas from these funding regions: 
Christchurch / Waimakariri / Selwyn / Hurunui (Canterbury region), Nelson / Tasman (Nelson region), Marlborough / Kaikoura (Marlborough region), or the Chatham Islands 
 
• What costs can you get funding for? 
Rata foundation will support both operating and project costs. This can include salaries, rent, power, phone and administrative costs. 

 
• What costs cannot be supported? 
-Grants supporting individuals 
-Retrospective applicants (projects that have already been complete) 
-projects that are benefiting outside of the funding regions listed above 
-funding related to curriculum in schools, such as computers, educational resources, salaries and operational expenses (unless cost is a part of a community based learning program) 
-The purchasing or replacements of resources and equipment (this can be applied for under the small grants program instead) 
-competitive events in high performance, sports or arts. 
-grants solely benefiting animals unless, it involves a community benefit of native conservation. 
-politically divisive or controversial projects 
-research projects except where cost may relate to a project evaluation 
-Projects with no community benefit or support 
-Funding for land purchase 
-Funding to clear debt 
-Funding directory for scholarships 
-Funding for overseas travel 
-Funding other trust funds 
-Funding political Parties  
-Supporting spiritual activity or religious organizations 
-Funding debt retirement 
-Funding activities deemed to be the responsibility or local or central government. 
 
• What documentation is required? 

The Rata foundation requires 
-copies of the trusts deed or constitution 
-latest financial statements or performance reports 
-Minutes from committee meetings, including: the date of the resolution, the dollar amount requested, a description of your request, and a signature of an authorized signature from the organisation. 
-two letters of support, dated within the last 12 months, signed, on letterhead. These can be from a national or regional organisation, a governing body, an organisation that you are affiliated to or a community organisation or network. These should state the organisation is in support of the project and endorse the organisation applying for funding. 
 
If your organisation holds these 
-A copy of an approval letter from the ministry of social development 
-Evidence of accreditation from a national body 
-A letter of affiliation from a national/regional sports body 
-Registration as a licensed early childhood education provider 
-documentation of a completed health/disability audit 
 
For large grants:  
-A full program/project budget, including the organization's strategic business plan. 
 
• How much can you apply for and how are decisions made? 
Decisions are made based on how an application matches the Rata foundations criteria. This includes how a project will help connect, learn, support, participate and sustain within a community  
The Rata foundation supply both small and large grants. Small grants are classified as $20,000 and less, Large grants include projects needing funds greater than $20,000. 
 
• How often does the funder accept applications? 
Small grants: applications always open, the general timeframe for funding decisions will be 10 weeks 
Large grants: applications always open, the general timeframe for funding decisions will be up to 4 months. 

 
• How far in advance of your proposed project would you need to apply? 
10 weeks-4 months at least 

 
• Can you apply as an individual? 
Nope
